Low self-esteem is one of the most common things I work with β and one of the most misunderstood. It often gets framed as a personality trait. That's not how it works.
Where Low Self-Esteem Comes From
Self-esteem is built β or damaged β through experience. Critical parenting, bullying, difficult relationships, repeated failure β these leave marks. Negative messages from others get internalised as beliefs: "I'm not good enough", "I'm unlovable". These beliefs then act as a filter, and we notice evidence that confirms them while discounting evidence that doesn't.
How It Shows Up
- Difficulty accepting praise
- Constant self-criticism and comparison to others
- People-pleasing and difficulty saying no
- Avoiding new challenges in case you fail
- Feeling like a fraud even when succeeding (imposter syndrome)
How CBT Helps
CBT for low self-esteem identifies the specific beliefs you hold about yourself, examines the evidence for and against them, and gradually builds a more balanced, realistic self-view. This isn't about becoming arrogant β it's about relating to yourself with the same fairness you'd offer a friend.
